9 Helpful Dog Training Tips

1. Choose a practical name for your dog

You want to give your dog a name that can be easily understood, clear, and distinguishable enough to draw your dog's attention during training. You can try names like “Rover”, “Bee Bee”, or “Buddy” which have clear, solid sounds that can be easily distinguished from the normal speech heard by your dog.

● Utilize this name during training, petting, playing, or anything that requires the attention of your dog.

● You will know the dog has learned it's name once he/she begins to respond to it.

● Develop a positive relationship with the dog whenever you use it's name to gain their attention. You can enhance the relationship whenever the dog responds to the name by offering a reward or commendation.

2. Choose the right equipment for your dog.

Puppies and small canines only require gentle equipment. Although more technical equipment (such as the Promise Leader) might be temporarily required for larger dogs based on their temperament to gain their attention. You might have to begin with a flat collar and a 6-foot leash (1.82m) apart from the dog’s favorite treat. You should request the help of a professional trainer when deciding on other equipment such as the “No Pull” harness, “Promise Leader” head halter, metal training collar, and any other equipment.

3. Instantly offer rewards

Dogs are fast learners and the concept of cause and effect might still be strange to them. Reward your dogs within two seconds of completing a learned activity or solidifying one. Delaying this can make the dog link the reward to any other task that was recently performed.

● Offer treats and compliments along with the desired behavior or you might end up compensating unrelated actions.

●For instance, if you are training your dog on how to sit, and s/he sits for just a few seconds and gets the reward while standing, you did not reward the sitting but the standing.

4. Consistency is key.

Don’t forget that training your dog is simply conditioning your dog to master specific habits. Therefore, without consistency in the space, your dog might be unable to figure out what you require of him/her. The training routine and objective must be known by anyone who lives and interacts with you and your dog on a consistent basis. For instance, if you are teaching your dog to avoid jumping on people. Prevent the kids from letting the dog jump on them to avoid undermining everything you’ve been teaching your dog so far.

●Similar commands must be used by everyone when training your dog. Using the command “sit” or “sit down” can confuse a dog that does not understand English.

5. Offer valuable treats

Using a valuable treat is an effective method of teaching your dog a vital or difficult command that will increase his/her chances of success. Based on your dog’s preference, your dog can be effectively inspired with treats like bread chunks, roasted chicken, lunch meat, or a slice of turkey.

● Phase-out the treats as your dog learns the command and restore them accordingly to move the training forward but always compliment your dog.

6. Methods of preventing barking

You shouldn’t commend your dog whenever it barks at you when they shouldn’t. You should rather ignore your dog until they stop barking and offer a reward as a compliment. Several reasons could cause a dog to bark. It could be for attention or out of frustration. The first step is to guarantee that the dog is protected from any harm

● Avoid playing or encouraging your dog while barking. This will inform them that you react whenever they bark.

● Avoid screaming at your dog to be peaceful when barking as this communicates to the dog that he/she is getting the desired attention.

7. Methods of preventing your dog from pulling

Most dogs usually pull the leash whenever they are taking a walk with a human. Stop immediately when your dog begins to pull on the leach. Stop any movement until your dog offers his/her attention by coming to your side. You can strengthen good habits by offering a treat as a reward

8. Commence training before mealtimes

Your dog will be more enticed by treats if he or she feeling a little hungry. You can reduce the normal meal and commence training after some hours. You can also commence training your dog before their first meal in the morning. Your dog will be more concentrated on the training when s/he is feeling a little hungry.

9. Conclude every training with something positive

Avoid getting discouraged whenever a training session is unsuccessful or your dog was unable to learn a new command. Instead, you must try to conclude on something that can be used to compliment or reward your dog. You can commend or praise your dog on a command they have already learned or the last thing your dog remembers. Your dog will consistently cherish you even if it is the first training session. So, keep the love burning!
